Polypogon hissaricus

HABIT Perennial. Culms geniculately ascending, or decumbent; 60–110 cm long; rooting from lower nodes. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 3–6 mm long; truncate, or obtuse. Leaf-blades 7–25 cm long; 3–7.5 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough on both sides.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; lanceolate; interrupted; loose, or effuse; 10–20 cm long. Primary panicle branches whorled at most nodes. Panicle axis bearing deciduous branches.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform; 1–1.5 mm long.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; (2.5–)3–3.5(–5) mm long; falling entire; deciduous with the pedicel; pedicel base acute. Floret callus glabrous.

GLUMES Glumes similar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma; shiny; gaping. Lower glume oblong; 2.5–4 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface scabrous. Lower glume apex acute; muticous. Upper glume oblong; 2.5–4 mm long; 1.2–1.6 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume surface scabrous. Upper glume apex obtuse; muticous.

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong; 2–2.5 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma apex entire; obtuse; muticous. Palea 0.66 length of lemma; hyaline; 2 -veined.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; membranous. Anthers 3; 1–1.5 mm long.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: Soviet Middle Asia, western Asia, and China. Asia-tropical: India.
