Setaria jaffrei
HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Culms erect; robust; 100–130 cm long; 2–3 mm diam.; 14–16 -noded. Culm-nodes glabrous, or pubescent. Lateral branches lacking. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode; glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs ciliate. Ligule a ciliate membrane; 2.8 mm long. Leaf-blades lanceolate; flat, or involute; 9–15 cm long; 10–12 mm wide; coriaceous; stiff.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open; linear; interrupted; 30–40 cm long; 0.5–0.7 cm wide; contracted about primary branches. Primary panicle branches appressed, or ascending; distant; 2–2.3 cm long; bearing spikelets almost to the base; sterile at the tips.
Spikelets subtended by an involucre. Fertile spikelets sessile; 1 in the cluster. Involucre composed of bristles; 0.3–2 mm long. Involucral bristles persistent; 1 per spikelet; flexible; antrorsely scaberulous; glabrous.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; dorsally compressed; acute; 3–4 mm long; 1.5 mm wide; falling entire. Floret callus pubescent.
GLUMES Glumes shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; clasping; 2.2 mm long; 0.66 length of spikelet; membranous; without keels; 7 -veined. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; 2.8 mm long; 0.75 length of spikelet; membranous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume inner surface pubescent (above). Upper glume apex acute.
FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; 5 -veined; acute. Palea of lower sterile floret 1–1.5 mm long; 0.33 length of lemma. Fertile lemma ovate; dorsally compressed; 3–4 mm long; indurate; without keel. Lemma surface striate; unwrinkled. Lemma margins involute. Palea involute; indurate. Palea keels ciliolate; adorned above.
