Sporobolus mitchellii
HABIT Perennial. Cataphylls evident. Rhizomes elongated. Culms decumbent; 22–45 cm long; wiry; 4–10 -noded. Lateral branches lacking. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface; outer margin glabrous, or hairy. Leaf-sheath oral hairs ciliate. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blade base broadly rounded. Leaf-blades 2.5–10 cm long; 2–3 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scaberulous; rough adaxially. Leaf-blade margins cartilaginous.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle spiciform; linear; continuous, or interrupted; 6–12.5 cm long; 0.4–0.7 cm wide. Primary panicle branches appressed; 1–3 -nate; 0.5 cm long. Panicle branches scabrous.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 0.5 mm long.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; subterete; 1.75–2 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.
GLUMES Glumes deciduous; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume ovate; 1.25 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scaberulous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume ovate; 1.25 mm long; 0.66–0.75 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; without keels; 1 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume apex acute.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 1.75–2 mm long; membranous; without keel; 1 -veined. Lemma apex acute. Palea readily splitting down midline; 1 length of lemma; 2 -veined. Palea keels approximate.
FRUIT Caryopsis with free soft pericarp; ellipsoid, or oblong; laterally compressed; 1 mm long.
