Fargesia boliana

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated. Culms 600 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete; 10–20 cm long; striate; distally pruinose. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement many. Culm-sheaths 2 length of internode; concolorous; hispid. Culm-sheath blade lanceolate; 10 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.

Racemes 1; single.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2–7 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 7–14 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume apex acute, or acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels. Upper glume apex acute, or acuminate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate, or ovate; 6–7 mm long; chartaceous; without keel. Lemma apex acuminate. Palea 5–6 mm long. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: China.
