Muhlenbergia nomnov

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated. Culms erect, or geniculately ascending; 45–50 cm long. Culm-nodes pubescent. Leaf-sheaths 2.1–3 cm long; longer than adjacent culm internode; keeled; striately veined; glabrous on surface. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 0.4–0.9 mm long; obtuse. Leaf-blades 7–13 cm long; 1.9–2.1 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous. Leaf-blade margins cartilaginous; scabrous.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; pyramidal; effuse; 6–9 cm long; 3–6 cm wide. Primary panicle branches ascending; 3–4 cm long. Panicle branches capillary.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 2.4–7.5 mm long; scabrous.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 2–3.1 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 0.8–1.6 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface glabrous. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 0.8–1.6 mm long; 0.5–0.66 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; without keels; 1 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume surface glabrous. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 1.5–2.4 mm long; membranous; without keel; 3 -veined. Lemma apex muticous. Palea oblanceolate; 1.2–1.8 mm long; 1 length of lemma; 2 -veined.

FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 3; yellow, or orange. Ovary glabrous.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: India and Indo-China.
