Ichnanthus longhi-wagnerae
HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short. Culms erect; 113–138 cm long; 5–8 mm diam.; without nodal roots. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface, or pilose. Leaf-sheath auricles erect. Ligule a ciliolate membrane; 1 mm long. Collar pilose. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.5 cm long. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 33–41 cm long; 28–34 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough on both sides. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex acuminate.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.
Racemes borne along a central axis; distant; 70–77 cm long. Central inflorescence axis 30–36 cm long. Spikelet packing distant; irregular.
Spikelets appressed; in pairs. Fertile spikelets pedicelled; 2 in the cluster. Pedicels filiform; unequal; 2 mm long, or 7–13 mm long; scabrous.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 6 mm long; falling entire; readily shedding fertile florets. Floret callus winged; with apical wings adnate to lemma; these appendages 1.8 mm long.
GLUMES Glumes similar; reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 5 mm long; 0.8 length of spikelet; herbaceous; 1-keeled; 5–7 -veined. Lower glume surface scabrous. Lower glume margins ciliolate. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume ovate; 6 mm long; 1 length of spikelet; herbaceous; 1-keeled; 9–11 -veined. Upper glume surface scabrous. Upper glume apex acuminate.
FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret similar to upper glume; elliptic; 6 mm long; 1 length of spikelet; 1-keeled; 9–11 -veined; scabrous; acuminate. Fertile lemma lanceolate, or ovate; dorsally compressed; 5 mm long; indurate; pallid, or light brown; without keel. Lemma margins involute. Palea involute; indurate.
DISTRIBUTION South America: Brazil.
