Dendrocalamus taybacensis
HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; pendulous at the tip; 2200 cm long; 150–180 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 31–37 cm long; distally pruinose. Lateral branches dendroid; arising from mid culm. Bud complement 1. Branch complement several; with 1 branch dominant. Culm-sheaths deciduous; coriaceous; hispid; with appressed hairs; with black hairs; hairy on margins; concave at apex, or truncate at apex; auriculate; with 0.5–1 mm high auricles; setose on shoulders; shoulders with 3 mm long hairs. Culm-sheath ligule 7–8 mm high; dentate. Culm-sheath blade triangular; erect; pubescent; acuminate. Leaves (8–)10–11(–13) per branch. Leaf-sheaths hispid. Leaf-sheath auricles absent. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 2 mm long; truncate. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.9–1 cm long. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong; 42–45(–52) cm long; 72–87(–98) mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 28–36 secondary veins; with distinct cross veins. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough abaxially. Leaf-blade apex acute.
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous; clustered at the nodes; in stellate clusters (of 3–10 spikelets); with glumaceous subtending bracts; with axillary buds at base of spikelet; prophyllate below lateral spikelets; with 1-keeled prophylls; leafless between clusters.
Fertile spikelets sessile.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 5 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate, or ovate; laterally compressed; compressed slightly; (7–)14–17 mm long; (2–)5–6 mm wide; falling entire. Rhachilla internodes suppressed between florets.
GLUMES Glumes two; 4–5 empty glumes; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume apex acute; mucronate. Upper glume ovate; 5.5–6 mm long; chartaceous; yellow, or light brown; without keels. Upper glume surface hispidulous. Upper glume margins pubescent. Upper glume apex truncate, or obtuse.
FLORETS Fertile florets increasing in size upwards. Fertile lemma lanceolate; 6.7–9.7 mm long; 5–6.9 mm wide; chartaceous; without keel. Lemma surface puberulous. Lemma margins ciliate. Lemma apex acute; mucronate. Palea lanceolate; 9.1–10.7 mm long; chartaceous; 10 -veined; 2-keeled but the uppermost without keels. Palea keels ciliolate.
FLOWER Lodicules absent. Anthers 6; 5.4–6.6 mm long; yellow; anther tip penicillate. Filaments free. Stigmas 1; pubescent. Ovary pubescent on apex.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: Indo-China.
