Ferrocalamus fibrillosus

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 200–300 cm long; 8–12 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 48 cm long. Lateral branches suffrutescent. Branch complement one; as thick as stem. Culm-sheaths persistent; 8.5–22 cm long; hispid; with black hairs; hairy on margins; concave at apex; auriculate; with 2–4 mm high auricles; setose on shoulders; shoulders with 4 mm long hairs. Culm-sheath ligule 1 mm high. Culm-sheath blade lanceolate; reflexed; 2–3 cm long. Leaf-sheaths pilose; hairs tawny. Leaf-sheath auricles erect; 4–6 mm long. Ligule a ciliolate membrane; 1 mm long. Leaf-blade base broadly rounded; with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.2 cm long. Leaf-blades oblong; 32 cm long; 80 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 20–24 secondary veins. Leaf-blade surface pubescent; hairy abaxially.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle; comprising 10 fertile spikelets.

Panicle open; ovate; 6 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2–3 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets oblong; subterete; 15–20 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes several; 1–2 empty glumes; persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume oblong; 5 mm long; chartaceous; without keels; 16–24 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins distinct. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume oblong; 5 mm long; chartaceous; without keels; 16–24 -veined.

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong; 9 mm long; 2.5 mm wide; chartaceous; without keel; 22 -veined. Lemma apex acute. Palea 9–11 mm long; 22 -veined. Palea apex obtuse. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; 1.5–2 mm long; acute. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2; pubescent.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: Indo-China.
