HABIT Perennial; caespitose; clumped densely. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms scandent; 1000 cm long; 15–35 mm diam.; woody; with root thorns from the nodes. Culm-internodes semiterete; with small lumen; 5–20 cm long; antrorsely scabrous; distally pubescent. Culm-nodes with distinct supra-nodal ridge. Lateral branches dendroid. Bud complement 1. Branch complement one; solitary; thinner than stem. Culm-sheaths persistent; 19–25 cm long; puberulous; without auricles. Culm-sheath ligule 2–3 mm high. Culm-sheath blade triangular; erect; 12.5–15.5 cm long; 65–125 mm wide; acute. Leaf-sheaths antrorsely scabrous. Leaf-sheath oral hairs setose; 5–7 mm long; pale. Leaf-sheath auricles erect; 0.5 mm long. Ligule a ciliolate membrane; 0.5 mm long. Collar with external ligule (a mere rim). Leaf-blade base asymmetrical; with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.15–0.2 cm long; petiole pubescent. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong; 2.5–4.5 cm long; 10–12 mm wide; yellowish green and mid-green; variegated (margins green). Leaf-blade venation with 8–10 secondary veins; with distinct cross veins. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex abruptly acute.
