Leaf-sheath oral hairs ciliate. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blade base broadly rounded. Leaf-blades linear, or lanceolate. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough adaxially (at base); pilose; sparsely hairy; hairy adaxially (at base). Leaf-blade apex acute, or acuminate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle. Peduncle 5 cm long.

Panicle open; ovate; 5–9 cm long; 1.5–4 cm wide. Panicle branches angular; scabrous; glabrous in axils.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 1–3 mm long; scaberulous.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–39 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets elliptic, or oblong, or ovate; laterally compressed; 4–10 mm long; 3–4 mm wide; breaking up at maturity; rhachilla persistent; shedding paleas. Rhachilla internodes zig-zag; 1 mm long.

GLUMES Glumes deciduous; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 1.3–1.7 mm long; 0.7 length of upper glume; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scaberulous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 1.9–2.1 mm long; 1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scaberulous. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate, or oblong; ovate in profile; 1.9–2 mm long; 0.4–0.8 mm wide; chartaceous; keeled; 3 -veined. Lemma midvein scaberulous. Lemma apex acute. Palea 1.3–1.9 mm long. Palea keels scaberulous. Palea apex obtuse, or acute. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
