Stipa austromongolica
HABIT Perennial. Culms 14–26 cm long. Leaf-sheaths antrorsely scabrous; outer margin glabrous, or hairy. Ligule a ciliolate membrane; 0.5–2(–3) mm long. Leaf-blades filiform; involute.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open; lanceolate.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; subterete; 27–34 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.
GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 25–32 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; 25–32 mm long; membranous; without keels. Upper glume apex acuminate.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; subterete; (7.7–)9–11.3 mm long; coriaceous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma surface pubescent; hairy all along; hairy in lines (7 lines). Lemma margins convolute; covering most of palea. Lemma hairs 0.7–0.9 mm long. Lemma apex surmounted by a ring of hairs; with this appendage (0.1–)0.3–1(–1.5) mm long; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn geniculate; (69–)75–110(–117) mm long overall; with (53–)65–90(–96) mm long limb; with twisted column; limb plumose; with (4–)4.5–5(–5.3) mm long hairs; glabrescent towards tip. Column of lemma awn 14–21 mm long; scabrous; pubescent, or ciliate; with (0.1–)0.5–2.5(–3) mm long hairs.
FLOWER Anthers 3; 3.5–4 mm long.
DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: Mongolia.
